Sergei Nirenburg
Professor, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering

Sergei Nirenburg is a professor in the Computer Science and Electrical Engineering Department at UMBC. Prior to coming to UMBC in 2002, he was the Director of the Computing Research Laboratory at New Mexico State University.

Dr. Nirenburg has directed a number of large-scale research and development projects in the areas of natural language processing, knowledge representation, reasoning, knowledge acquisition and cognitive modeling. He has written or edited seven books and published over 130 articles in various areas of computational linguistics and artificial intelligence.

He holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel and an M.Sc. in Computational Linguistics from Kharkov State University, USSR.

  • Modality
    A DoD-sponsored project devoted to semi-automatically annotating a corpus for modal meanings in text (2007-2008). Led a research team of 3.
  • Cognitive Modeling
    An ONR-sponsored MURI project (2009-2014) devoted to developing artificial intelligent agents with decision making, language, memory and learning capabilities. Lead a research team of 8.
  • ARL CTA
    A component of the ARL-sponsored consortium on cognitive aspects of the battlefield (2001-02). Led a research team of 3.
  • Reference
    A DoD-sponsored project devoted to extending the coverage of referring expression and their semantic treatment in terms of an agent’s fact repository (2008-2011). Led a research team of 4.
  • Boas I & II
    DoD-sponsored projects on building tools for Computational analysis of less often studied languages. (2000-2004). Led a research team of 8.
  • JIKD
    A DoD-sponsored project on knowledge extraction, The Joint Institute of Knowledge Discovery at the University of Maryland. (2005-06). Led a research team of 4.
