Hillol Kargupta
Professor, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering

A Professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, Hillol Kargupta teaches Data Mining, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence. He is the co-founder of AGNIK LLC, a data analytics company for mobile, distributed, and embedded environments.

Kargupta’s research interests include mobile and distributed data mining. He is the director of UMBC’s DIADIC Laboratory, which specializes in distributed computation for data analysis and modeling.

An IEEE fellow, he has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles. His research has been funded by organizations like the US National Science Foundation, the US Air Force, the Department of Homeland Security, NASA, and others. Most recently, he and his colleagues received a $1.2 million research grant from the AFOSR Multi-disciplinary University Research Initiative for A Framework for Managing the Assured Information Sharing Lifecycle. He is featured in Journeys to Data Mining: Experiences from 15 Renowned Researchers (Spring, 2012).

His work in the field has earned him the the 2010 Frost & Sullivan Enabling Technology of Year Award, the IBM Innovation Award in 2008, and a National Science Foundation CAREER award in 2001 for his research on ubiquitous and distributed data mining.
